Now both companies are fractured and gone. RCA and CBS/Columbia were mortal enemies for many years in many related markets, but also actually what we could now call "frenemies" in some respects, with their engineers sharing some info (but not all) for the general good of the industry.
RCA produced some of those discs then adopted the same speed for their consumer 33 1/3 disc system in 1930, which failed because of the general failed economy and other factors.Ĥ5 was RCA's fast 1949 reaction to Columbia's 1948 introduction of the "Long Play" 33 1/3 record (which specified a different stylus and EQ to the 1930 system), which irritated RCA completely and RCA refused to use that speed for several years. The 33 1/3 disc speed was first used by Vitaphone (later merged into Warner Brothers/First National) for the first successful sound movies system, with sound on disc, Vitaphone, in 1926. This almost compatible gearing necessity for 60 vs. Electric: 78.26 rpm in 60Hz countries, 77.92 rpm in 50Hz countries, something that a reissue producer needs to be aware of and many are not aware. The 78 speed was agreed upon by record manufacturers worldwide to use easy specific gear ratios with standard 3600rpm electric motors after evolving from acoustic records which might be recorded and played anywhere from 60rpm to 100 rpm with their mechanical motors. I won't be the first to remark with amusement on the set number! This 19-record Columbia set dates to the 1940s and takes about the same amount of shelf space as Norma: Not an opera, but a work of like length, and likely to be familiar even to those of us who don't collect classical: Handel's Messiah. (Yeah, I repurposed those Cortina library cases.)īellini's Norma, on 18 electrically recorded Parlophone 78s from the 1930s, take up 4": Here's my collection of them this represents 8 operas, which efficiently packed take up 28" of a 33" shelf: Those are probably the Pathe acoustic sets issued in the first couple of decades of the 20th century, which, with their idiosyncratic broad, shallow grooves, run from around 15 to around 25 records each.
